“Our Own Recipe”: Done Properly’s Scale Up Strategy

By Claudio Pedreros, Done Properly’s Co-Founder and COO

Today, alongside Done Properly, we face a significant challenge: we are scaling a new way to generate proteins that are friendly to both us and our planet.

Fortunately, I rely on a team of excellent individuals, with whom we maintain synergy through daily spaces for creation and discussion of ideas, implementing creativity as a habit.

The path of productive scaling is not always a straight line towards the final goal, and this is what pushes me to continue day by day, improving the opportunities for our human team.

I mentioned in my previous post that we started setting up our plant, a major milestone for us as a company, and also for Chile, since its volume makes us an important reference in the production of fungal proteins at the Latin American level.

But now I want to share my thought process when faced with the dilemma: should we build our own plant and invest in capital expenditures, or should we look for a contract manufacturer?

The search for someone to produce for us was relentless. Everyone’s recommendations were not to build, as the risk and expenses were exorbitant, in addition to a tremendous possibility of failure…

Most decisions are economic, that’s clear, but I felt there was something more here.

When you create new processes, new products, and you need the flexibility of time on your side, with the opportunity to iterate without restrictions, and above all, a competitive advantage that sets your company apart from the others, having something of your own positions you at the forefront.

I decided to move forward with becoming producers, against some criticism even from those who support us today, hehe. Because I knew that by generating good relationships (key🔑), it could be achieved.

We developed a multidisciplinary team. Engineers in bioprocesses, biotechnologies, mechanics, food, industrial, etc. And along with that, a method to face and lower risks.

The soul of all scaling is in the knowledge of the people, and trusting those who are supporting you.

At Done Properly, we DO NOT buy our equipment from a store, we develop it from paper to steel, reducing its cost to a tenth compared to the market offer, and making our product accessible for integration as raw material for the CPGs that today lead the food market.

I am proud because our lines work, the national engineering is strong and efficient, we are capable of tackling global challenges and coming out successful. Here I leave evidence of what happened and invite everyone who undertakes not to follow recipes. Give yourself the opportunity to believe in yourself, in your ideas, and move forward.

Happily, I ask myself: Is there anyone with the capacity to produce tons of Mycoprotein in Latam?

The answer is YES. At Done Properly, we are achieving it, today we just need to optimize and continue optimizing.
